Have you developed jowls?

If you have developed “jowls,” you know what they are…that loose, drooping skin along the cheeks, jawline or throat.  What you may not know is what can be done to slow down…or reverse…their development.

Here are just four of the more common treatments that may be recommended, plus a surgical option that has only recently become available:

1. Work from the inside out.  Our facial plastic surgeons often recommend 3 to 5 non-invasive Skin Tyte® treatments, generally spaced about a month apart, to patients who want to achieve moderate, noticeable improvement.  Skin Tyte (as the name implies) is designed to tighten loose skin by stimulating the deep layers of the skin to rebuild and replenish the volume of your own collagen.  The new collagen growth generally improves and softens the appearance of jowls, deep smile lines and wrinkles, too.

2. Give your cheeks a boost.  Restoring fullness to the cheeks with an injectable filler tends to lift and tighten skin along the jawline. Restylane® or Juvederm®, are sometimes used for this purpose.  Our doctors often suggest Sculptra® Aesthetic, a more subtle filler treatment (3 or 4 injections over a period of approximately 3 months), as it works more gradually, giving a more natural appearance  without giving away the fact that you had something done.  Like Skin Tyte, Sculptra is formulated to prompt the body to create new layers of collagen. The effects can last for up to two years.

3.  Have an “Ultimate Neck” procedure.  Your doctor may recommend this surgical alternative if the skin of the neck is also sagging.  When this is the case, the accumulation of fat and loosened muscle bands are the culprits.  Drs. LaFerriere and Kienstra can surgically tighten the neck muscles to conform to the underlying structure of the neck and remove excess fat to recontour and smooth the appearance of the neck and jaw line.

4. Sometimes “less” means “more.”  SmartLaser Lift combines new laser technology with traditional techniques.  This surgical procedure takes less time, involves less trauma to delicate skin and muscle tissue, less swelling and bruising, and less downtime, and more natural-looking results.

Other treatments, too, are available, but you won’t know which one will give you the best, most natural-looking results unless you schedule a consultation with Dr. LaFerriere or Dr. Kienstra.  “If it doesn’t look natural, it doesn’t look good.”

Can a nose job make you look younger?

Alas, the nose is not exempt from the effects of time responsible for changes to the face.  As the structures that support the nose weaken with age, it tends to lengthen, the tip rotates, and it can also develop a bit of a hump.  So, does that mean that having a “nose job” (rhinoplasty) can make you look younger?

The authors of a recent article in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery have presented objective evidence that there is indeed a noticeable rejuvenation bonus associated with rhinoplasty.  For this study, researchers took consistent before and after photos (same camera, lighting and distance) of 53 rhinoplasty patients ages 15 to 61. Fifty volunteers were asked to look one of each pair of photos and guess the age of the person in the photo.  They repeated the process one month later with the other photo of each pair.

The results? The volunteers thought that the patients looked an average of 1.5 years younger in their “after” photos, with the most noticeable rejuvenating effects seen in the older patients in the study.

They get no respect!

When it comes protection from the sun’s UV rays, the ears are often the Rodney Dangerfields of the body…they get no respect.  The skin of the ears (particularly at the tips) is sensitive and can burn easily, but baseball caps and short hair often leave them exposed and vulnerable.
