The “Black Market”: Beware of Illegal Cosmetic Procedures

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Cosmetic procedures to improve your appearance and confidence may be something you truly want, and you may be seeking the least expensive option available, but recent research shows that this isn’t always the way to go. Sometimes, it can lead to very bad results.

According to an article published in The Aesthetic Guide, illegal “black market” cosmetic procedures are becoming more common. These are often performed by unlicensed or under-trained professionals who do not always make the health and safety of their patients a top priority. The products and equipment they use may also be of lower quality, so you must be careful when choosing your provider.

You should always make sure that your provider is certified to perform the procedure you want, whether it is a facelift, Botox injection, nose surgery, or skin treatment. Drs. Laferriere and Kienstra are board-certified facial plastic surgeons with years of experience you can TRUST.

Ear Lobe Improvements May Restore a More Youthful Appearance

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Large earrings have definitely come back in style, but have you ever stopped to consider how these fashion statements might affect your ears in the future? Heavy jewelry can stretch your earlobes over time and cause them to sag or droop. In addition to the natural thinning of the lobes as we mature, this combination can decrease the elasticity of earlobes and cause them to stretch out of shape.

However, there may be cosmetic solutions for many women who have developed sagging earlobes, whether due to wearing heavy jewelry or age. It is possible to reconstruct the earlobe to a more normal, youthful appearance.

It is best to avoid wearing heavy jewelry that could potentially cause negative long-term affects. However, if your lobes have already gotten worse, consider a cosmetic improvement that could help restore their appearance.

More Men See COSMETIC PROCEDURES As A Way To Remain Competitive At Work

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Women still account for most of the cosmetic procedures performed, but more men are now willing to do something to remedy a sagging neck, hooded upper eyes or bags under the eyes, and to rid themselves of stubborn fat deposits.  While they may seek them out for different reasons than a woman, the number of men having a facelift increased 14% in 2010.  The number who had liposuction increased 7%, and the number of eyelid procedures in men increased by 15%.  All in all, more than 1.1 million men had a cosmetic procedure last year.

And it’s not just older men who are doing it.  Younger men, too, are viewing cosmetic procedures as a perfectly acceptable way to be more attractive or to correct features they consider unmasculine.

Why now?

For one thing, surgery that once required a hospital stay and weeks of downtime to recover is increasingly performed on an outpatient basis, with patients ready to re-enter their normal world after less time off from work.  Men aren’t in the habit of devoting time to a regular regimen of beauty care, but see quick, less invasive treatments, such as Botox® and dermal fillers that can be performed quickly during a short office visit, as attractive options.

Job hunting?

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

More than ever before, job hunters…and those wanting to hold on to the jobs they have… are turning to cosmetic procedures to give them an “edge.”

Seventy-five percent of physicians surveyed by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery said that they had treated patients who requested facial plastic surgery to stay competitive in cut-throat job market.  “Seasoned experts, once pictured in ads with lots of wrinkles, have been replaced by young go-getters with multiple degrees and the appearance of boundless energy,” said Dr. Steven Pearlman.

These patients consider it an investment that will help them get a job and pay for itself.
