Face Firming Foods

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Time, sunlight, and gravity can take a toll on your face. Over time, collagen, a protein in skin, bones, and muscles, breaks down. You get out of bed one morning, look in the mirror, and wonder “What happened to my firm skin?”

Something you can do to promote collagen production is change your diet. Here are some foods to add to your diet to encourage collagen production.

Face Firming Foods:

  • Water rich vegetables like cucumber and celery promote collagen growth by adding sulfur to the diet.
  • Fish has omega 3 fatty acids which create stronger cells.
  • Soy products, such as soymilk and tofu, contain anti-aging antioxidants.
  • Red vegetables like tomatoes, peppers and beets help to protect against sun damage.
  • Dark green vegetables like spinach and kale add Vitamin C and help to protect against free radicals.
  • Berries such as blackberries and raspberries also fight free radicals.
  • White tea blocks enzymes that can break down collagen.
  • Orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes contain Vitamin A which regenerates damaged collagen.

These foods are not just great for firming your face; they’re also beneficial to the rest of the body. If you’re looking for immediate wrinkle relief, schedule a consultation with Dr. Keith LaFerriere or Dr. Matthew Kienstra today.

What do wrinkles and bone fractures have in common?

Friday, July 29th, 2011

We already knew that a woman’s age, the percentage of body fat, and several other factors influence bone density.  Now, the results of a Yale School of Medicine study suggest that among women in their late 40s and early 60s, those with the worst wrinkles had lower bone density in the hip, lumbar spine and heel than women with smoother faces.

The 114 women in the study had gone through menopause within the past three years and were not taking hormone therapy medications.

Bones and skin have something in common:  collagen.  The same age-related changes in collagen that are a factor in the formation of wrinkles and sagging skin may account for deterioration of bone.  However, further studies will be needed to confirm the relationship between wrinkles and a woman’s risk of bone fracture.  Specifically, researchers want to know if evaluating the intensity of wrinkling will make it possible to identify women who are at risk for fractures, without expensive tests.

The study understandably did not include women who have had a cosmetic procedure to address wrinkling.  Fortunately, wrinkles are much easier to treat than a bone fracture if you have an experienced facial plastic surgeon!

Interesting statistics

A survey commissioned by L’Bel USA yielded the following insights:

  • 76% of women carry makeup or skincare product in their purse on a regular basis (most common:  lipstick and lip gloss).
  • 25% would use their paycheck to splurge on a fragrance product.
  • 10% said if they could use their paycheck to splurge on one beauty product, they would choose foundation.
  • Women are more willing to sacrifice coffee and chocolate for one week rather than give up their favorite beauty product.

The New Face of Sunscreen

Monday, June 20th, 2011

After years of confusing SPF numbers and sunblock promises, the FDA is adopting new sunscreen regulations. Though the regulations will not be in effect for a year, they promise clear information and precise wording on sunscreen labels.

You will no longer see these terms on sunscreen bottles:

  • Sunblock
  • Waterproof
  • Sweatproof

Instead, sunscreen manufacturers may advertise how long the sunscreen is “water resistant.” Sunscreens are now also required to be broad spectrum. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect equally against UVB and UVA rays. While both types are dangerous, they affect the skin in different ways; UVB causes sunburns and UVA causes wrinkles.

In addition to these regulations, only lotions with an SPF number of 15 or higher can claim to reduce the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging. Although a savvy consumer will be better protected by these rules, doctors remind sun bathers to reapply lotion every forty to eighty minutes.
